Boston Qualifier

Running Accomplishments:

2008 Hobble Creek Half Marathon: 1:41:49
2008 Swiss Days 10K: 45:32
2008 Charleston 5k: 22:06

Short-Term Running Goals:

2009: Kick the Army Team's butt on "Ragnar"  (again!)
2009: Run a sub-20 minute 5k

Long-Term Running Goals:

I'd like to be one of those 75 year guys that runs a sub 8:00 pace half marathon

Would like to do a marathon and possibly qualify for Boston...  Though I haven't found the desire to actually attempt a marathon yet.  I see too many people getting injured during training...  Kind of leaves me wondering what the point is.

Personal:

Married. 36 years old.  I ran cross country in high school and pretty much hated every minute of it.  After high school I didn't run again for 17 years.  Somehow I got talked into running the Wasatch Back Relay in 2007 and found that this time around with the right shoes and socks I actually like running.  I haven't stopped running since.

This was a beautiful scenic race.  The course is flat and the weather was perfect. I ran an 8:04 pace. Unfortunately, it was the director's first race and even though he capped the race entries I think he was overwhelmed by the response.  Things were a little disorganized and they timed the race with some interesting timing chips (carrier pigeon race chips pinned to the race bibs).  There were no bathrooms at the start line (saw a few people running over to a farmer's field) and there was not a clock display at the finish line.  Luckily, I had my trusty Garmin Forerunner 305.   Overall though it was a fun race and I would run it again just for the scenery.

It was perfect weather, they had very nice Nordictrack Technical T-shirts (Yes, I run for shirts), plenty of volunteers to assist with registration, and lots of cheering people along the race route.  Parking wasn't bad at all.  I even got a few inspirational high fives from some young children along the route.  There were tons of people at the race and unfortunately I was back in the pack at the start line.  It wasn't one of those races where people are tripping all over one another, but I couldn't break out and start passing people for about the first 1/4 mile or so.   As far as the course goes, most of the first mile is uphill and most of the last mile is uphill, but long middle stretch is all downhill.

Overall, it was a fun race, but I didn't feel very well today.  I was trying to run a sub 7:38 pace, but it didn't happen.  I ran a 7:48 pace instead. I even wanted to (but didn't) walk the last mile. I just didn't have any energy - probably because I didn't sleep well all week.

Welcome to the blog!

Sleep is very important. It is nearly impossible to run at your full potential if you do not get good sleep for a whole week.

Welcome, this was a though race for me as well. Like Sasha says sleep is very inportant and I think that was my problem as well.

welcome to the blog, i'm a "newbie" too. congrats on the race, sorry it didn't go quite as well as you wanted.

i saw that you wrote you would like to run a marathon but are scared of getting injured. i was the same way, but finally ran my first in march. i did the 3-runs-a-week routine and it worked great (one speed day, one tempo day and one distance day). as long as you give your body enough time to recover from your long runs you should be able to make it!

8:24 pace...  Would have been faster, but the last two miles were one of those unpleasant bordering on painful experiences where one is just hoping to find a port-a-potty on the side of the road some where...   (I didn't find a magical bathroom stop on the side of the road, but I did barely make it home...)

Race: Charleston 5k (3.1 Miles) 00:22:06, Place overall: 6
Easy MilesMarathon Pace MilesThreshold MilesVO2 Max MilesTotal Distance
3.000.003.100.006.10

The Charleston 5k was not well advertised. (Which as you will see below was a plus for me!)  Apparently there was a flyer at a local gym called "The Fit Stop," but I've never been there so obviously I didn't see it.  (I believe running on a treadmill is so un-zenlike. I tried a few times and couldn't even do a mile). Actually, I heard about the race Tuesday from an acquantaince in the neighborhood.  I'm quickly losing interest in the larger races that run like clockwork and make me feel like a cog in a wheel directing me to my place as one for whom the bell curve tolls.  (Let's just say that I am not an outlier).  One standard deviation is about as good as it gets for me at the big races.  Besides that I find that I am drawn to the quirky races, and the Charleston 5k definitely fit that bill.  (Btw, if you want to ever run a cool quirky race, check out the Schuztenfest in Midway.  The scenery is spectacular).

The race was sponsored by an odd combination: a podiatrist, Mount Olympus Waters, and Rebel Bail Bonds.  (I guess runners might tend a little to the wild side too.  Hey - you never know when you're going to need a good bail bondsman).  The turnout of 100 people was far greater than expected, and they ran out of shirts about 5 minutes after registration opened.  (Though they promised to get more shirts in the next couple of weeks for everyone that didn't get one).  The race was preceded by the hoisting of the American Flag by some cute cub scouts and the Pledge of Allegance.  I followed that by my own little recitation: "I Pledge to run as fast as I can without puking..." The race director (the podiatrist) jumped up on a golf cart modified to look like a mini-jeep and fired a toy cap gun to start the race.  I started way too fast (5:22) and promptly felt a bug fly into my mouth and down my throat.  I couldn't cough it out and went ahead and swallowed hard a coule of times to get it to go all the way down thinking at least I had a little protein in my system. The timing system was a handheld unit (no visible clock) and they used an old wire hanger to collect the pull-tabs from the bib numbers.  Gotta love it!

I have done zero speedwork this year and have done mostly longer races (half marathons and a 10ks), so I was seriously wanting in terms of fast twitch muscle fibers necessary for 5k racing.  I gutted it out and my legs finally started to loosen up just as I rounded the last turn for the 25 yard home stretch.  I ended up coming in 6th place, but I didn't stick around to see how I did in my age division.  I ran an easy 3 miles to cool down and went home just in time to fix my kids some french toast for breakfast.

I love quirky races!

Whoa, fast 1st mile! Can't believe you ate a bug in a race! So sorry. Bail bondsmen, huh? That's funny.

By the way, I am sure you ARE an outlier in terms of speed if you include all the people your age, and not just the ones who show up in a big race.

Pretty ugly 12 miles, but I made it. I even survived a surprise dog attack on the way back to Midway. I said a few choice words that I can't include in this nice family friendly blog. I hope the dog got my point though. Seems like some dogs only understand certain vocabulary words. Makes one wonder why, when learning a foreign language, the swear words are the easiest and first words one learns... Maybe we are distantly related to dogs?

This week I didn't feel very well during my training runs, which was a bad omen for his race.  Tuesday I couldn't do more than 2 miles -- I just didn't have any energy.  Thursday I gutted out 4 miles, but the pace was slow and I just wasn't feeling it.  Typically when that happens, its a sign that I'm about to get sick.  Well, sure enough today I got the stomach flu.

At the beginning I got stuck way in the back of the pack and couldn't break out for almost half a mile.  I was walking and just couldn't get out.  I finally broke out and some smart aleck yells, "yeah, go win it dude."  Idiot.  Then some girl tries to pass me saying, "Watch out, bud."  Too bad she couldn't hold that pace for more than 200 yards and I ended up blowing by her on the uphill stretch.  "Sorry bud."

From there it went from bad to worse.  My stomach started hurting and I could tell that Montezuma was going to have his way with me today.   I counted a grand total of 4 port-a-potties until mile 7 -- all of which were occupied.   By mile 7 I couldn't hold out any longer and lucked out when I ducked into a nice green 4 foot by 4 foot piece of heaven.  3 minutes later I was back on the road, but I my pace was still pretty slow.  My stomach started huring again at mile 10, but there were no more port-a-potties the rest of the way.  It was all I could do to "hold tight" and run as fast as I could.

I survived, but I barely made it home in time.  I have since received medallion status for all the frequent flyer trips I've made to the John.

I was going to try to go for a 7:30 pace and a PR, but Montezuma won today.  With my slow start back in the brat pack, my 3 minute port-a-pottie interlude, and my "proactive" running style, the best I could do today was 8:27.  But, on the bright side, at least I made it home without soiling my nice new Pearl Izumi running shorts...

I am glad your shoes stayed clean as well...that could have been nasty!

According to the race predictor, when you account for "holding tight" for 13.1 miles, and factor in "running with stomach flu" you easily PR'd with a 1:37!

Really though, way to run through all that!

Great job on the race. Those portapotties were very elusive. I finally had to lose 3 minutes waiting in line for one - I was getting desperate on the highway stretch - no trees!

Fun recovery run after the Montezuma's Revenge 1/2 Marathon last week.  Felt pretty good. A guy I run with in the Midway Running Club must be getting faster (or I must be getting slower).  I tried to push it but he kept up with me the entire time.  Good job.

8:07 pace.  Fun course from the base of the Girls camp on the East side of Heber to Midway.  (Although I didn't particularly like crossing Main Street).  I haven't run much on the East side of town for a while so it was good to get out and run a new course.  (As a side note, I passed an incredible number of vacant - half finished real estate developments which doesn't bode well for the real estate market in Wasatch County).

However, I've about decided that I like running in Midway more than anywhere in Wasatch County.   On the East side of Heber there are long stretches of road, but the roads don't have wide shoulders and I'm always worried about being hit by some car as the sun comes up over the mountains blinding the drivers heading east.  The West side of Heber (okay - mainly Southfield Road) is a haven for contractors driving their big "ever so environmentally friendly"1-ton diesel trucks.  I'm not sure why, but the roads in Midway are pretty empty and there are more runners per capita in Midway than in Heber.

I'm thinking my goal to run a 7:30 pace at Hobble Creek is a little too agressive.  I haven't done enough speed work this year and my 3 day a week running schedule hasn't prepared me quite enough.  I think I'm going to shoot for a 7:50 pace.  I won't be in the "Elite 100" but then again, based on my new perspective, anything faster than 8:30 without interference from Montezuma is a great race.

Since my parents are facing a little dispute with Heber City over how long it has taken them to get their landscaping in (new home 1 1/2 years old) I took the day off work Thursday and spent 12 long grueling hours spreading 7 truck loads of topsoil at their house.  A friend of theirs (a nice 80 year old Japanese guy) came and helped move the topsoil around with a tractor, but didn't have the proper attachment to level it.  I.e., we ended up spreading it by hand because we were concerned that if we went and rented a tractor with a box scaper it might offend him.  (The fact my parents are on a shoestring budget to put the yard in was a factor too, but I would have paid for the tractor myself).  Twelve hours of raking and rolling take a toll on one's body.  I think I overexerted myself because Thursday night I couldn't sleep.  All I could do was lay there and think about how tired I was and how much it hurt to lay in any position.  I finally fell asleep about 5 a.m. and got a couple hours of restless sleep.

So, after that great preparation for the Hobble Creek Half, I was wondering what kind of an experience I would have today.  We left home at 4:00 a.m. for the nice drive to Mapleton and jumped on one of the first busses headed up the canyon.  Fortunately it wasn't very cold at the top.  Better yet, they started the race on time this year!

Unlike the Provo 1/2 I didn't come across any smart alecks or women trying to pass while calling me "bud".  There was no stomach flu, and I didn't need a port-a-potty along the route.  Things were pretty routine other than a couple of people we passed at mile 3 that were breathing way too hard (As we passed one guy trying to take in gulps of air like a sprinter that had just finished a 100 m dash, my friend turned to me and says, "I think that guy's in trouble").  We also met a nice guy from American Fork and chatted with him for a few miles.

I felt pretty good for the first 8 miles running around a 7:30 - 7:40 pace, but then the fatigue of this week set in and I had to slow things down.  The last mile was pretty miserable.  My legs were shouting "WALK! WALK! WALK!" but I kept going.  Some guy wanted to race me at the end so I tried to keep up with him down the last stretch.  We passed a couple of girls, but I never did catch him.

Even though I was tired I managed to eek out 1:41:49 completely running out of energy as I went under the clock.  It wasn't what I was shooting for, but I beat my time from last year by a little more than 10 minutes!  Unfortunately, I later learned that my cousin beat me by 2 minutes... Watch out next year buddy!

Onto other quests! Next Saturday is a great "people's race":  Midway Swiss Days.  There are no cash prizes, so not very many local elites show up.  There are only about 300 runners.   I want to try to break 7:30 pace and beat the guy who placed ahead of me last year.

Wow, that was not really a taper---especially in the sun all day. That sun can take a bite out of life, for sure.

You did great. Was that a 1/2 marathon PR for you??

Indeed, it was a 1/2 marathon PR for me! Felt lucky after everything this week.

This is a tough course, but it was a great race.  It was sponsored by the Midway Running Club, and since I'm a member I also liked the entry fee:  free! (Of course, I had to volunteer to do registration, which was fun anyway).   The race director, Mark Nelson, is a great guy.  I've run with him this summer and enjoyed getting to know him.

The first two miles were freezing cold (what happened to summer?), but I felt great.  I felt strong the entire race, even though the first three miles were all uphill.  My only mistake was starting to kick a little too far from the finish line.  A couple of people passed me in the last 50 feet.

Anyway, I have a new 10k PR!  I beat last year's time by about 2 minutes.
